Compressing clips from Avid® systems

Xprove makes it easy!

Though possible to export an Xprove-ready file directly from Avid®, it’s usually faster to use another application to handle the compression. Avid is a great editing tool. It’s not designed to be a compression tool.

Avid editing systems can export a QuickTime reference movie. The reference movie is a small file that looks just like a QuickTime movie, but contains no media. Instead it points to the native Avid OMFI or MXF media on the hard disk, allowing QuickTime to read it as if it were a standard QuickTime movie. Since no media is transcoded during the export, the process is remarkably fast.

Step 1

Avid save dialogSelect the sequence you would like to export in its bin. Go to the File menu and select Export. At the bottom the Save dialog box, you will see several pre-built export templates. Avid doesn’t ship with a QuickTime reference template, so you will have to make one.

Click on the Option button. A dialog box similar to one pictured will appear. Select QuickTime Reference from the Export As pull-down menu.

The Use Marks and Use Enabled Tracks give you the option of only exporting the sequence from its in-point to its out-point and including only the tracks enabled in the sequence timeline respectively. This can be useful feature, but most often you’ll leave both boxes unchecked.

Check the Flatten, Fill Space with Black, and Render All Effects boxes. Leave the Display Aspect Ratio set to Native Dimensions. We set the proper display size during compression.

Step 2

Click the Save As button to save these settings for future use.

Step 3

The QuickTime reference movie can then be used as a source to create Xprove-ready files with QuickTime Pro. If you don't have QuickTime Pro, you might be able to use these shareware compression utilities.
